Music Style

Soda Stereo was an Argentine rock band brought together in 1982 in Buenos Aires made up of three men: Charly Alberti (drums), Héctor “Zeta” Bosio and Gustavo Cerati (lead vocals, guitars). The band went on to have great success throughout Latin America.

Soda Stereo originally took its influence from new wave bands such as The Police, and eventually composed songs with a more rock style. They became known for being one the greatest alternative national rock bands of Argentina.

History

The band originally split in 1997 after a period of disagreements. It wasn’t until 10 years later, in 2007 when Soda Stero came back together to tour the “Gira Me Verás Volver”. This tour broke several Latin American records for concert ticket sales, with more than one million fans gathered to hear them play!

Following the band’s final split, each one of the band members went their own way. However, while lead singer, Gustavo Cerati was touring solo in Venezuela he suffered a stroke and later fell into a coma. After four years in a coma, Cerati died from respiratory arrest the morning of 4 September 2014 while on life support. An extremely tragic day for this Argentine rock legend.

En la Ciudad de la Furia (In the city of fury) was written by Cerati and released in 1989 as the first single from their ‘88 album “Doble Vida”.

Here are the lyrics translated into English:

The City of Fury

You’ll see me fly

by the city of fury

where no one knows of me

and I am part of everything

Nothing will change

even with a “curve-ahead” warning

I see fear in their faces

there are no more fables

in the city of fury

You’ll see me dive

like a bird of prey

You’ll see me dive

on empty terraces

I shall undress

by the blue streets [?]

I shall take refuge

before all awake

You’ll allow me to sleep until dawn

between your legs, between your legs

You’ll know how to hide me well and disappear,

into the fog, into the mist

A winged man

misses the land [is nostalgic]

You’ll see me fly

by the city of fury

where no one knows me

and I am part of everything

By the sunlight

my wings melt

only in the dark can I find

what binds me

to the city of fury

You’ll see me fall

like an wild arrow

You’ll see me fall

between flights fleeting

Buenos Aires appears

so touchy

the target of fury [is the goal of fury]

is what remains in their faces

You’ll allow me to sleep until the dawn

between your legs, between your legs

You’ll know how to hide me well and disappear,

into the fog, into the mist

A winged man

prefers the night
