Wondering why you have a day off? A long weekend? Or the reason everything is closed? It is probably one of Argentina’s many feriados! Argentina is known for its numerous pubic/national holidays year round! Today it´s the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.

Today, December 8th, Argentina celebrates the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, recognizing the Mother Mary. People gather around the city and country for religious processions and homages- the most important one located in the northern province of Salta. This is also marks the official day people begin assembling their Christmas trees with ornaments and lights. This holiday is celebrated throughout many South American countries including: Uruguay, Brazil, Peru, and Ecuador.

In the province of Salta, more specifically the town of Tres Cerritos, their is a legend that claims the Mother Mary appeared in the year 1990 and has been sending messages regularly since then! During the month of December this little town packs in the masses to celebrate the Mother Mary.

Throughout the rest of the  country- believers and non-believers begin the Christmas decorating process in stores, restaurants and homes. Occasionally you will find that Argentina’s very own Obelisco becomes a huge Christmas tree in the center of the city!
